GERMAN SCIENTISTS RETURN FROM USSR
ADN, East-German news agency, reports that a group of 218 German scientists
and technical experts and their families returned from the USSR to East Germany
on 21 September. 3,950. They had worked in secret industries in the USSR since the end
of World War II.
Of the estimated number of 1+,000 German specialists, employed at unknown
places in the USSR, this is the first group to return to East Germany. These
specialists were sent to the USSR by Soviet authorities immediately after the end
of hostilities, and their families were permitted to join them afterward.
Among the specialists are rocket construction experts, optical experts
from the Zeiss Plant in Jena, and jet engine experts.
In May 1950, Gerhard Eisler, East Germany's information chief, had denied
that German civilian specialists were working in the USSR and had told West
German journalists that reports to this effect were all lies and imperialist prop-
aganda.
