PRODUCTION OF PHARMACEUTICALS IN THE USSR -- Berlin Chemische Industrie, No 4,
Apr 50
In 1949, production of penicillin in the USSR is reported to have been 7
times that of the preceeding year. The penicillin factory in Riga, the Soviet
Union's largest plant for the production of antibiotics, is largely responsible
for this increase. There has also been a considerable rise in the output of
antimalarial drugs. Anopheles mosquitoes are now being exterminated chiefly by
spraying from aircraft. Emulsions of Paris green and compounds based on Dal-
matian camomile are used. for this purpose. Moreover, inhabitants of malaria-
infested areas are vaccinated with antimalarials.
There has also been an increase in the production of dimethylaminophenyldi-
methylpyrazolon.
