Canton -- Rapid progress hss been made during the past (months in repair-
ing highways and restoring traffic in eastern Kwangtung in crder to facilitate
support for the military Forces along the coast by the cities and rural areas
cf the Tung Chiang.
The 13 trunk highways of this region had an aggregate length of -1,219.7
kilometers, of which only 172 kilometers were in good condition after liberation.

Since liberation, repairs have been campl.eted on sn aggregate of jlq.5 kilo-
metern cf the above-mentioned highwaya, as follows:
On +,he Shan-Ha1ng Highway (Sha.o-!cxan to Hsing-Wing), between Lien-p?ing
(~ r- )and Lao-lung-asu a ~ ~~`- ~ ;; the Chung-Ting Highway; the Teng-Ho
Highway;rthe Hui-Tan Highway; and cn the K~.isng-Shan (Canton-Swatow Highway, the
section between Tseng-ch?eng and _.-pc-ac, and the aecticn between Ping-shan
and. K'uei-t'an.
In the course of these repairs seven "urge perttanent :?idges, with an-aggre-
gate length cf 304..6 metexss ?lave been repaired. Four hundred sixty-tbree wooden
bridges, with sn aggregate 'ength oY 4,?g4.4 meters, n.awe been constructed or re-

The Tung Chiang Highway Bureau is preparing to begin before '.'he end of 1950
thE: reBtoration of the highway which runs through the center of +.his region pass-
ing Hui-yang, Tzu-chin, and Wu-hus, and connecca Hsfng-zii.ng and Mei-hsien ~ith
Canton,. Engineers have already 'been sent cut to make preliminary surveys for this
pra,ject,.

In order to secure fluids for construction, the Ch'i-k~~:an Company has been in-
strueted to sell its. buildings end other property in Macao, and. if the company?s
funds are insufficient, the Kwangtung provincial government may arrange loans to
