In several suburbs of Dresden the petitions against the use of the atom bomb
were issued together with the food-ration cards. The population was told that the-
ration cards would be taken from them if they did not sign the petition against the
use of the atom bomb. They were told that by declining to sign, they were voting
for the dropping of the atom bomb.
PRESSURE ON CHURCH CHARITIES -- Argentiniaches Tageblatt, No 19,527, 10. Jun 50
In the future, collections for the Protestant Church in Sachsen-Anhalt may
be made only by collectors with a special identity card with photograph. The Peo-
ple's Police will confiscate the money collected by 'anyone who does not. possess
such.a card. From now on, house-to-house collections may be taken up only from
church members, because "the rest of the. people are not to be bothered by the church."

To help coal miners of the Karl Marx Mine I,. a black coal mine in the
Zwickau area, to meet their quota, 29 People's Policemen joined them in their
work. Assisted by a few miners, the police "volunteers" mined?160 mine cars of
coal.
UPPSALA DECLINES INVITATION -- Dagens Nyheter, No 151, 8 Jun 50
Uppsala University has decided not to accept an invitation from the soviet
Zon7 German Academy of Sciences to send a delegate to attend the latter's jubilee.
Nor will a congratulatory telegram be sent. The reason. for the decision is that
the German Academy of Sciences is considered so politically involved that it actu-
ally does not represent free research.
