cording to a letter from one Communist leader, Canton is susceptible to all
kinds of wild rumors from Hong Kong and Macao and this fact has necessitated
some countermeasures.

The programs will be broadcast from the Canton People's Radio Station or
indirectly from Peiping, Shanghai, and Central and South China. The programs
will concentrate on clarifying the world situation, and on explaining the,
policy of the New Democracy. Emphasis will be on newspaper articles and com
ments, and speeches by famous personalities. Night programs will specialize
in New Democracy songs, and Soviet music depicting Marxist and Leninist
ideologies.
It is obvious that this latest action is a move in the "cold war" against
such anti-Communist broadcasts as the Voice of America, the Voice of Free
China, and Hong Kong broadcasts, etc.

Canton, 9 June -- The consensus of listeners is that the Voice of America
is very much welcomed because of its good redeption and its interesting pro-
grams. The Hong Kong broadcasts, it is said, are too timid, though praise-
worthy, and the Free Taiwan Broadcasts are superior to those of the Hong Kong
broadcasts but are filled with propaganda and are excessively boastful.

RESTRICTS PURCHASE OF RADIO SETS -- Hong Kong Hsing-tao Jih-pao, 8 Jun 50
Canton, 8 June -- Public Security Subbureau police were dispatched today
throughout the entire city to notify radio stores to inspect all identifica-
tion certificates of their cuatomers and to record their names, addresses,
and occupations to facilitate future investigation by the police. Radio as-
sembling and repair shops also received a similar order with the warning
that violators will be severely dealt with.
This latest order places additional restrictions on radio dealers and
may be a step toward prohibiting the use of medium-wave and short-wave radio
receivc_~ by the city populace.
According to the same dispatch, the owners of radio sets in all locali-
ties of Kwangtung Province will be required to register before 8 June 1950
and listening to anti-Communist broadcasts thereafter will be forbidden.
KWANGTUNG TO SET UP LISTENING STATIONS -- Hong Kong Ta Kung Pao, 10 Jun 50
Canton, 9 June -- The Kwangtung provincial government has issued the fol-
lowing notice regarding the establishment of radio listening stations through-
out the province:
In accordance with the decision of the Main News Control Bureau of the
Central People's government to establi'h radio listening stations all the
people's governments must give prompt attention to the utilization of radio
broadcasting for transmission of news and official orders, conducting of
party activities, and education of the people. As a preliminary step, each
hsien under this government must compile and report to this government the
following information before August 1950:
1. During June, each hsien must complete the listing of the following
items: number of receivers in each hsien: number of tubes in each receiver;
type of wave length; foreign or domestic make; name and type of receiver;
and whether it is AC or DC. Each hsien and city, as a rule, should have at
least one receiver. For those which do not as yet have one, state the
possibility of acquiring one; whether it can be purchased locally; whether
there is a person able to repair it; and how to solve the electricity problem
if the receiver uses direct current.
2. Each hsien should select a responsible person within its educational
section to operate the listening station. His personal history must then be
sent to the Canton Radio Station for approval and acceptance, so that the
necessary training of operators can be completed in July.
3. The work of the listening stations includes receiving news, official
orders, notices, news comments, lectures from the Central, Central and South,
and Canton People's Broadcasting Stations, and disseminating this information
to the people as quickly as possible by means of mimeographed sheets, black-
boards, etc. The station should arrange to have groups and organizations
listen directly to all important broadcasts. When a station is established,
its entire operation shall be closely coordinated with activities of the
Canton Broadcasting Station.
4. All the receivers belong to the public, and their use for private
listening or for entertainment purposes is prohibited.

URUMCHI ESTABLISHES 7 LISTENING STATIONS -- Hong Kong Wen-hui Pao, 10 Jun 50
Urumchi, 8 June (Hsin-hua) -- The Urumchi People's Broadcasting Station
has established local listening stations at the following places: Ha-mi-,
Karashahr, A-k'o-su, Kashgar, Su-lo, K'en-:h'e, and Knotan. The duty of the
listening stations is to receive news, official orders, and other important
matters broadcast from the Urumchi People's Broadcasting Station, and dis-
seminate them to the people,
