The.first-quarter gross-production plan was fulfilled 102 percent by
republic and local industrial enterprises of the Ukrainian SSR. The Minis-
try of Local Industry Ukrainian SSR, the Ministry of Furniture and Woodcraft
Industry Ukrainian SSR, and the Ministry of Construction Materials Industry
Ukrainian SSR, although fulfilling the gross-production plan, failed to meet
the plan for a number of products.
In the first quarter 1950, kolkhozes, sovkhozes and MTS of the Ukrainian
SSR made satisfactory preparations for spring sowing. As of 1 April 1950,
preparation of seeds for planting was practically completed.
MTS and forest-shelter-belt stations of the Ministry of Agriculture Uk-
rainian SSR had completed more repairs by 10 April 1950 than during the same
period of 1949, as follows: 14 percent more tractors, 17 percent more trac-
tor plows, 23 percent more seeders, and 15 percent more cultivators.
In 1950, all oblasts of the Ukrainian SSR began spring planting earlier
than in 1949. As of 1 April 1950, the southern oblasts and most of the west-
ern oblasts of the Ukraine had completed sowing of grain crops. The Ukrain-
ian SSR as a.whole had completed sowing of grain crops by 10 April, that is,
10 days earlier than last year. By 15 April, 27 million hectares more of all
spring crops had been planted than during the same period of 1949. Planting
of sugar beets, sunflowers, and annual and perennial grasses was done in con-
siderably less time than last year.
Other types of field work were done on a larger scale and at an earlier
date than before. As of 10 April 1950, twice as much fallow had been plowed
as in 1949.
In 1950, the planting of forest shelter belts and oak forests for indus-
trial purposes developed on a larger scale. By 10 April, kolkhozes as well
as sovkhozes of the Ministry of State Farms Ukrainian SSR in the steppe and
forest-steppe regions of the Ukraine had planted 60,000 hectares more of
forest shelter belts than in the same period of 1949. The area planted with
oaks on kolkhoz land in 1950 is 77 percent of the entire area of forest plan-
tations.

of the plan.
As a result of the reduction of state retail prices on food and industrial
goods, effective 1 March 1950, there was a further increase in purchasing
power and in retail commodity turnover. Following the reduction of state re-
tail prices, sales of food and industrial goods increased. During March, con-
siderably larger quantities of the following goods were sold than in February;
meat, sausage, fish and herrings, canned goods, butter, confectionery, cotton
and woolen fabric, sewn goods, hosiery, leather and rubber footwear, and soap.
Sales increased several times as compared with previous months in the case of
