ZENICA IRONWORKS TO EXPAND
NEW UNITS TO BE COMPLETED THIS YEAR -- Slovenski Porocevalec, No 84, 7 Apr 50
The Zenica Ironworks', No 3 Steel Mill covering an area of 15,000 square
meters, is almost 300 meters long, and is as high as a six-story building, was
completed in 1949. Three of Its Siemens-Martin furnaces were completed in 1949
and three more such furnaces will be built in 1950. Two of these will take a
100-ton charge and the third will take a 60-ton charge.
This year the new steel mill, a special furnace room, a room for convert-
ers, a new forging shop, a new rolling mill, a large coke factory, and the first
large blast furnace with all the necessary auxiliary machinery are to be com-
pleted. In addition to these, 180 family apartments are scheduled to be com-
pleted and 200 more to be constructed. To facilitate construction, a lime pit
with a daily capacity of 10 tons of lime and a brick factory which will produce
2 million bricks in 1950 were built in 1949.
The new forging shop, which will be the largest in Yugoslavia, is scheduled
to be completed by the end of 1950. The shop will be equipped with two large
hydraulic presses, one with a pressure capacity of 1,800 tons, the other with a
pressure capacity of 3,500 tons. The first will be used for forged machine
parts up to 14 tons and the second for parts up to 70 tons. The shop also will
be equipped with large steam hammers, which will produce various forged parts
for locomotives and railroad cars. A rolling mill for rims of locomotive and
railroad-car wheels will be a part of the large forging shop. The forging shop
will have a production capacity of over 10,000 forged machine parts per year.
The first blast furnace of the Zenica combine, which is scheduled to be
built by the end of 1950, will have a capacity 4.5 times greater than thi new
blast furnace at Sisak. The blast furnace -ill produce 700 tons of raw iron
r day. At present, it is located on the other side of the Bosse, River. How-
ever, T:uen the new 900-meter river bed, which will do away with the large arc
of the old river bed, is built, the blast furnace will be on the same side of
the river as the rest of the combine. The glowing liquid iron will be trans-
ported by a bridge crane equipped with a 490-meter track from the blast furnace
to the new steel mill. The new coke factory will be located in the vicinity of
the blast furnace.

HEAVY INDUSTRY'S PRODUCTION INCREASES -- Rad, No 58, 9 Mar 50
Belgrade, 7 March--The 1949 production of heavy industry in Yugoslavia
was, on the average, 5 percent greater in 1949 than in 1948. The motor industry
had a 33-percent increase in production in 1949 as compared to 1948, and the
agricultural machinery industry had a 31-percent increase. The achievements of
ferrous metallurgy, on the other hand, are not so good because of the antiquated
equipment used. In 1949, 33 percent more trucks were produced than in 1948.
FACTORY TO UP MACHINE PRODUCTION -- Ljudska Pravica, No 75, 28 Mar 50
The "dastrebac" Machine Factory and Foundry in Nis will move this year into
new buildings. It will develop into a combine for the production of machinery
and metal equipment.

h
1949.
