The Statistics Administration, Belorussian SSR, reports that all industry
located in the republic fulfilled the 1949 gross-production plan 102 percent
and increased production 31 percent over 1948. Fulfillment of the plan by ob-

This year, .7 percent more winter crops were planted for the 1)50 harvest
than in 1;48, plowing increased 22 percent, and 100 percent more manure was
hauled. Substantial additions to the tractor park were made and the plan for
tractor work was fulfilled successfully. The volume of tractor work increased
percent over 1)43 and the work per tractor also ir-reased. Drainage of
sww,.,1 and was done on a large scale. Co.lcctivlzation ..as continued in the
western oblasts, and nearly 4,Or'C collective holdings were organized during 1949.
The Ministry of Automobile Transport. Belorussian 3SR fulfilled the 1949
freight-hauling pica 108 percent in tonnage and 98 percent in too-kilometers.
The increase over 1;48 in tonnage was 55 percent and in ton-kilometers, 39 per-
cent.
The 1,49 plan for :)assenger transport by city streetcars was fulfilled 116
percent, and passenger transport increased 42 percent over 1949.
Trading organizations of the republic fulfilled 95 percent of the 1949 plan
for retail trade turnover, including 130.3 percent by consumers' cooperatives
and )0 percent by local trading organizations. Sale of woolen fabric, sewn
articles, leather shoes, meat products, fish products, and confectionery in-
creased in 194+ over 1 149. Prices of beef, pork. milk, sweet cream butter, and
other products decreased in markets in oblast centers.
By the beginning of the 1949 - 1;50 school year, the prewar number of
schools for universal education had been restored and the number of teachers
in these schools was 8 percent over the 1940 figure. For the first time in the
republic, compulsory 7-year education is being put into effect everywhere. In
comparison with 1948, the enrollment in primary, 7-year, and secondary schools
has increased 3 percent, including 46 percent in grades five through seven and
31 percent in grades eight through ten. More teachers graduated this year than
in 1945, including 70 percent froci nigher educational correspondence irstitrtions
and 50 percent from. secondary educational correspondence institutions. In 1949,
enrollment in schools for working and rural youth increased 9 percent. Higher
and secondary educational institutions in the republic trained 1 percent more
specialists with higher and uedium qualifications than in 1948.

The number of beds in sanatoriums increased 14 percent during l94) and the
number of beds in institutions of the Ministry of Health Belorussian SSR was
106 percent of 1948.
