The Scre-? and Rivet Factory at Lodz i;torted production in 1886. The factory
produces mainly screws, nuts, washers, and rivets. During the war, production was
suspended but wax rest.aied i=ediately after Polend's linerhtion. A branch of the
PZPR party was organized at the factory to keep a vigil over the ecoirmic and
political life of workers at U e factory. Numerous factory achiove.. rit , such as
the fulfillment of the 1948 plan before schedules date, production of an additional
twelve tons of screws, rivets, etc., in honor of the ^ongresa of Trade Unions, and
surpassing of the plan in April b3 1.0 percent, wore brought aboat through close
cooperation of the PZPR party mambors (cif whom there are 34) with nonparty workers.
However, a recent occurrence at the factory has served to discredit the
party me,rburs, On 21 May, a bearing in a 60-horsepower motor burned out causing
30 machines to become idle. It is possible that the bearing burned out for
tochni.I;e?. reasons. however, the unneceseary delay in repairing it can be blamed
on the PZPR members' negligence. Shortly after the bearing was damaged, a techni-
cians' meeting was called. At the meeting, Jankowski, production manager and
member of the party, undertook the repair of the motor within 3 days. On 7 June
the motor was still not reppired. Finally the Association was notified and. or..
17 June another motor was sent. This motor too was damaged. It was sent to
"Elektrobudovy" and the repair costs were 173,000 zlotys. In the face of this
expense agd, loss of production, the party assumed a passive attitude In the case.
The party mist be remindad that it has certain obligations and cannot rest on its
former successes. The delay in repair work on tho motor was inexcusable at the
factory in Iodz since the damage was not caused by overwork.

At a meeting held by the assembly of Village Cooperatives, regional leaders
strongly criticized the hostile attitude shown by ecii, members of the clergy toward
present day polibiee. A delegate from Rzeszow 1~ Jesr:is;zwo itate%i that some priests
were Molding special services to pray for miracles. In parts of Olsztyn Wojewodztwo
the clergy tried to organize missions d'iring the harvesting season to dra;r people
away from their work.
