Feb 1.953 (A) SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT NO. THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION Tergu. Mures (46?33'N, 24?33'E) a centuries old. tour. which had a population of about 50 thousand in 1944. From 1940 to 1944, & r_,.ng the occupation by the Hungarian army, this town was called Msrosvasorhrl;f. Ah,at two kilometers southwest of the town is a small village. The Bun?srlar. name for it was Medgyesfalva. I d.. not know the Rumanian name for this village. Ts:ga: Mures is situated in a valley. On the southern side of the town there is a fatrly steep hill or small mountain. On the east side of the Mures River the valley PN:- oesd.s about one and one-ha,7t kilometers aa ends at another a'sal.l_ mountaic,. T? genaral topography of the town is rolling. 2. Almost all 'the streets are paveivit:a asphalt and are two lanes wide. *SoW.Ve- on steep 3ncliaes bricks set on the small edge are uses.. Bever maintenance is fe:il'tated with a nuaber of manholes loeatwi throughout the entire street system. 3. Residences are chiefly of brick construction with hip roofs covered with red slats. Most residences located in the central part of town have three or four stories, while the majority of the other homes are two-story. The heaviest con- centration of residences is in the southern part of the town. Most homes are heated with rat+ara1 gas, most have running water and electricity. Host persons own their homes and do not rent them. 4. Population is chiefly. Rungarian. Rumanians constitute the largest minority group although there is a small German minority group. People eat the principal meal at noon. Motion pictures and concerts are preferred forma of ansement and soccer football is the favorite sport. 5? It is of brick T ld This building was used for training apprentices of many crafts such as bricklayers and carpenters. 5. Greek Orthodox Church. 6. Police headquarters. Brick construction. A very old building. 7. Roman Catholic Church. 8. Drill field for soldiers. I cannot give dimensions but medium size passenger airplanes could land here. 9. Military high school. 10. City hospital. Brick construction. Either three or four stories. 11. Orphanage. 12. Military barracks. I?do not know how many soldiers could be quartered here. 13?. It was built before Wor District building. Brick construction, erected in 1940. All district offices are located here. 16. Four gymnasiums.- Two for.' liberal - arts'courses and tv ror commercial ccurees. 17. Rumanian Orthodox Church. 18. Protestan, gymnasium. 19. Cemetery. Used by both Protestants and Catholics.' 20. One of the highest hills in town. It is used by a mzmber of -rifle clubs for target. shooting area. 21. Protestant Church. These railroad lines ? run to Bucharest and Brasov. 35 ~ A small railroad station. This is a narrow gauge railroad which has passenger and freight?service to Praid (46?33'N, 25?08'E). The narrow top of the dam is used as a foot bridge by pedestrians. It is not wide enough for vehicles. 39. Electrical power station. 40. Turkish baths. 41. City swimming pool. 42. Two lanes wide. I saw trucks carrying approximately a five-ton load bkossing-this-bridge. 65.. Mures River. It flows southveetwsrdly along the north side of the town. Most?ofthe.?.time?it.ia;very.:shallow and can be forded; it varies in width from 50 to 200 meters. The river floods almost every spring but does not damage the .town buildings because the overflow is confined chiefly to the north side of the river where there are only a few buildings.
