1. Soviet authorities in Rumania are setting great hopes on the new oil-producing
regions of Moldavia and Oltenia (Little Wallachia). In addition to work in
Moine*ti (Moldavia), where oil had been produced for many years, there has been
continual drilling for oil in Moldovita eighty kilometers from Piatra-fleam~).
There is reason .to believe that there are important deposits here.
2. While this oil prospecting has given excellent results, large scale exploitation is
not yet practical. Work is held up by delay in the arrival of the necessary
equipment.
3. Another oil region, now flourishing, is (Fors (Oltenia). Numerous drills have
been set up at Albeni, Balteni, Pe*teana-Jiu (twenty kilometers from Targu-Jiu,
on the Targu-Jiu--Craiova line).
4. There has also been active exploitation at Sacel, a small bathing resort,
thirty-two kilometers from Targu-Jiu. in the direction of Ramnicu1-Va,lcea. This
district seems to have a very promising future. The Soviet authorities are in
absolute control and are pushing exploitation intensively.
5. A big depot for oil drilling equipment has been set up near the railroad station
at Targu-Jiu. To get it there quickly, all equipment is transported by motor
truck. The crude oil from the wells is shipped by tank trucks. The Rumanian
Government is also arranging for construction of a big refinery at Targu-Jiu.
The work has been entrusted to Sovromoonstructzia of Ploesti, which specializes
in construction of this sort. This new refinery will be located in the First of
May Street (formerly Strado General Dragalina), at T.rgu-Jiu. It will occupy
forty hectares.

sager for the greGtest possible results, the itumanian Government is trying to
get oil in certain other regions, at a depth of 3,000 meters. The plan is to
use a series of ."our pumps. Thus far no more than two pumps are being used, at
a depth not reported. Many militia and security agents are employed in
protecting this rr.-chinery, which, in Rumania, is very valuable and very rare.
Sabotage is feared, in the active oil installations there is strict police
surveillance, to anticipate any possible danger.
7. Part of this equipment comes from Czechoslovakia, and part from the Resita
factory in 2umania.
8. In several of the oil regions around PloeMti, military precautions have been
added to those of the police, the security, and the militia. Al posts are very
thick. At Carnpina, there is an art regiment, made up of specially trusted men.
This occupies the barracks of the former regiment of mountain troops. The force
is so large that these do not suffice and additional barracks have been built.
9. At Ploe$ti a new building is now ready for security forces. This is at the
corner of Vasile Lupu :street and Logofatul Taut. The building has three stories
above ground and t:?;o stories below ground. The latter have concrete cells, for
use as the local security prison. In the underground section there is also a
crematorium, of the most modem: design.
