At this time, Soviet engineers were
drilling for oil in the area about the town. counter} over 200 oil
derricks but only 5 or 6 storage tanks. There were about 300 Soviet
technicians located at Wu-Su. 70% of the crude oil
was sent to the USSR and 30% remained in China.
the Soviet technicians would dig a well and after
it began to produce would re-seal the well and move to as adjacent area to
build another. It appeared that they were preparing for some future date
when 100% of the oil could be taken to the USSR rather than only 70%.
