Bureau Notice No, 8-60
TO: Okinawa Bureau Editors
SUBJECT : Mr., John Sheringham9 s 'Visit
The following is a summation of Mr. Sheringham's remarks
concerning the coverage provided for the BBC by the Okinawa
Bureau :
CHINA
Home Service and NONA: Our coverage of the Home
Service an NCNA is more than adequate. BBC would like to have
the Peking Press Review from NCNA English by 1000 GMT as long as
reception of'NCNA in London is poor,
International Service: The BBC has great interest in
Africa and as a result has levied certain requirements from Peking
programs ,to Africa. These requirements were made more specific
by Mr. Sheringham in the list he prepared on 3 November 1960. The
BBC would like more information about Peking's foreign language
broadcasts and it was believed this could be derived from monitored
summaries. The bureau will airmail samples to Mro Sheringham per-
iodically to. satisfy this need,
Regional Services: BBC would like stepped up coverage
and processing commensurate with our ability to do so) of regional
radios. Types of information desired include that providing a
clue to atomic developments in China' weather reports., agricul-
tural actii.e CVs, . we are going to airmail some monitor's
summaries to, BBC for perusal and information.
NORTH VIETNAM AND NORTH KOREA
Coverage is more than adequate.
NON100 MJNIST ASIAN IOUNTRIES
I
The BBC is anxious to receive more information on the
routine day-to-day happenings in Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea,
and Taiwan. Mr. Sheringham said our coverage ?of these areas
during a; crisis is excellent but the BBC does not get enough in-
formation on' events that lead up to the crisis. Types of infor-
mation that he singled out from program summaries as being of

interest to the BBC included the weekly national and inter-
national reviews from Indonesia and visits of British officials
to different countries.
Because FBIS normally files the text from Peking of a com-
munique resulting from Chinese negotiations with non-comnrLanist
countries, such as Burma, India, and Indonesia, the BBC would
like a' FYI indicating that the local radio of the non-communist
country concerned carried the communique too,
Mr. Sheringham indicated that the BB probably will require
the information we file from Ceylon, India and Pakistan but he
will have to go into this more after he returns to Cavershamm
At that time he also will update all the requirements levied on
the bureau by the BBC, We probably will not receive this until.
