publications issued by the agencies of the U.S. government. The depository
program makes it possible for this library with limited financial resources
to serve its own-"community" of 4500 students and 250 faculty as well as the
general population of this region.
The C?I.A.. is one agency which issues many useful maps and reports, only
a small portion of which it makes available for the depository libraries such
as us. I ?peak not of confidential materials, but reports such as:

use only or for strictly administrative or operational
purposes which have no public interests or educational
value and publications classified for reasons of national
security, shall be made available to depository libraries
through the facilities of the Superintendent of Documents
for public information. Each component of the Government
shall furnish the Superintendent of_Documents a list of such
publications it issued during the previous month, that were
obtained from sources other than the Government Printing Offices"

As a depository library, we attempt to make available a wide variety of
publications issued by the agencies of the U.S. government. The depository
program makes it possible for this library with limited financial resources
to serve its own "community" of 4500 students and 250 faculty-as well as the
general population of this region.
Your agency is one which issues many useful maps and reports, only a
small portion of which it makes available for the depository libraries such
as us. I speak not of confidential materials, but reports such as:
China: Agricultural performance in 1975
Indonesia-1965: The coup that bac'..fired_
In-ternational and transnat_iona7. terrorism: Diagnosis and prognosis
These are apparently made available only to a very select few university and
special libraries.
I respectfully ask that your agency faithfully abide bye the depository
law, (u.s.c. title 44, section 1902) which says:
"Government publications, except those determined by
their issuing components to be required for official
use only or for strictly administrative or o?per_ational
purposes which have no public interests or educational
value and publications classified for reasons of national
security, shall be made available to depository libraries
through the facilities of the Superintendent of Documents
for public information. Each component of the Govern,ent
shall furnish the Superintendent of Documents a list of
such publications it issued during the previous month,
that were obtained from sources other than the Government
Printing Office."

The Director
Forwarded herewith is a response to a letter
addressed to you from a college librarian asking why
Agency unclassified publications are not being
distributed under the provisions of the depository
library law. The letter states that the Joint
Committee on Printing and Superintendent of Documents
have told us we are exempt from the law's provisions
and describes the various outlets the Agency uses
for releasing unclassified publications.
