Mauritania
President Mohamed Saleck shuffled his cabinet last
night and dismissed four ministers, including the Minis-
ters of Interior and Finance. According to a French
news service, several of those ousted had advocated
that Mauritania reach an understanding with the Polisario
Front over Western Sahara. The President took the
defense portfolio and brought into his cabinet as
Minister of Finance the man who held that position
under former President Ould Daddah.

The US Mission in Geneva has reported that the
Deputy Director General of the General Agreement on
Tariffs and Trade organization met last week with a
high-ranking Chinese diplomat who explored in depth the
question of China's joining GATT. The diplomat asked
whether China could merely assume the membership previous-
ly held by Taiwan; he also asked about the advantages
of a nation being classified as a developing country.
The GATT official is convinced the Chinese are seriously
considering joining the organization.
Portugal - Eastern Europe
According to a Western news service, Portuguese
President Eanes and Romanian leader Ceausescu agreed
during talks yesterday in Bucharest that their countries
should expand bilateral trade and cooperation. Romania
is expected to grant Portugal a $100-million credit.
Eanes, on a trip through Eastern Europe, earlier signed
two agreements in Bulgaria designed to expand trade. He
will remain in Bucharest until tomorrow when he flies to
Hungary.
