IRAN: Currency Purchases
Prime Minister Bazargan yesterday told US Ambassa-
dor Sullivan he had received reports that the Soviet-sup-
ported Tudeh Party is buying up Iranian rials, possibly
in Romania. In addition, Iranian bankers have informed
the US Embassy that the Tudeh Party and the Soviet Embassy
were purchasing rials in Tehran.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry disclosed last night
that Iraq has issued an invitation for a three-day meet-
ing of Arab foreign and economic ministers in Baghdad
beginning Tuesday, a day after the Egyptian-Israeli peace
treaty is expected to be signed in Washington. The
Syrian Government has agreed to participate.
Thai Prime Minister Kriangsak flew to the USSR to-
day at the head of a 23-man delegation. Bangkok radio
said Kriangsak is scheduled to return home next Tuesday.

first countries to recognize the leftist regime that re-

Portugal
President Eanes recently told US Ambassador Bloom-
field that he expects the Portuguese political situation
to "get worse" but is determined to avoid aligning him-
self with any of the parties in seeking a solution. The
Ambassador notes that Eanes was reiterating his somewhat
strict constructionist views on the role of the presi-
dency in those remarks, but suggests Eanes may consider
it tactically wise to allow other alternatives to fail
conspicuously before he takes a stronger political role.
Eanes also complained that the Communists are creating
as much instability as possible in order to damage the
economy, but the Embassy reports that the Communists so
far have refrained from all-out efforts to destabilize
the country.
