Trinh also said that an "unnamed" ASEAN state is helping the ousted Pol Pot re- gime and should stop. the Thai do not plan to respond to the nonspecific accusation. The US Em- bassy in Vientiane, meanwhile, reports that Lao offi- cials appear to be closely coordinating with Hanoi to calm ASEAN fears. The Embassy concludes that Hanoi may think it both useful and appropriate to have Laos assure ASEAN members that Vietnamese dominance over a neighbor does not have to be destabilizing. 25X1 The Security Council yesterday, by a 12-0 vote, re- newed the mandate of UNIFIL for five months. The USSR and Czechoslovakia abstained and China did not partici- pate in the vote. The US Mission at the UN reports that the French, who have troops in UNIFIL and professed to want only a four-month extension, would have abstained if the Council had opted for the six months'-renewal sought by Lebanese Foreign Minister Boutros. 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO31000120001-3 Top Secret 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79T00975A031000120001-3 Top Secret Approved For Release 2004/07/08 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO31000120001-3
