The fugitive had been on the martial law wanted list for over a year, and security officials assumed that he had left the country. The official who had sheltered the fugitive and two other foreign ministry offi- cials were arrested, but it apparently has not been established that the latter two knew the fugitive was there. Foreign Minister Bayulken's position in the cabinet could be jeopardized as a result of the arrests, which followed an anonymous tip. Criti- cism of the foreign ministry is already widespread within government circles because of its alleged disproportionate influence. This is the first in- dication of Communist infiltration in the civilian bureaucracy, although numerous junior officers have been dismissed from the armed forces in recent months for leftist connections. This incident will fan dissatisfaction among the members of the officer corps, which contains elements who favor increased military control. 27 May 72 Central Intelligence Bulletin 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22000030002-2 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22000030002-2 Next 2 Page(s) In Document Exempt Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22000030002-2 Approved Fo T-62 Medium Tank First observed Main armament Weight Speed Cruising range Crew Photograph of model 1961 115mm smoothbore gun 40.2 tons 30 mph 216 miles 4 1 :1 25X1 25X1 25X1 ppFovedFor Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22000030002-2 Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975A022q EGYPT-USSR: Egypt reportedly received at least ten T-62 tanks from the USSR earlier this year. The T-62 is a more advanced tank and carries a more pow- erful gun than the T-55 that now makes up the main force of Egypt's armor corps. T-62s would improve Egypt's capabilities against any tank in the Israeli inventory, including the US M-60. Heretofore, the Soviets have not given the T-62 tank to any country outside the Warsaw Pact. Egypt probably will re- ceive only a limited number of T-62s in the near fu- ture, but even a few will help demonstrate to Sadat Moscow's willingness to s u p p l y the Egyptians with more modern weapons. 25X1 25X1 (continued) 27 May 72 Central Intelligence Bulletin 9 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22000030002-2 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22000030002-2 Next 1 Page(s) In Document Exempt Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22000030002-2 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22000030002-2 Top Secret Top Secret Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO22000030002-2
