C Congo (Brazzaville): Sharp fighting broke out
in Brazzaville yesterday as army troops moved to
disarm resisting elements of the leftist-controlled
youth organization. The army leaders who forced the
issue have informed Congo (Kinshasa) President Mo-
butu that they intend to go on to implement their
plan, which Mobutu is backing, for a full-scale army
takeover. It remains uncertain, however, whether
these army officers have the necessary strength and
unity to win a showdown against the forces, including
the Civil Defense Corps, which seem likely to oppose
them. These forces may now make common cause with
recently eclipsed President Massamba-Debat. 25X1
