Finance Minister Strauss announced that acceptance of the treaty would not cause a break in the Bonn coalition, thereby dis- pelling rumors that his opposition might break up the government. Defense Committee Chairman Zimmermann, a leading spokesman for the hard-line Christian Social Union--the Bavarian wing of the Christian Democratic Union--dropped part of his remarks attacking the treaty during the 14 March parliamentary debate and did not announce the CSU's official opposition to the NPT, as had been expected. Despite these signs of softening in opposition to the treaty, it is likely that criticism and debate will continue because the opponents have not altered their objection to its substance. 18Mar68 7 Approved For Rele a 2002/10/25 - G'I^-Rno79T00975A019900130001-6 25X 25X Approved For Releo Guatemala: Terrorism in Guatemala City con- tinues and is likely to increase during the coming weeks. 25X1 25X1 I the Arch- bishop of Guatemala--missing since Saturday-- has been kidnapped.
