More than 2,000 students broke into the embassy on 1 October--the second anniversary of the Communist coup--and beat up 17 Chinese, two of whom are on the critical list. This action was taken without the approval of the government, which had prohibited anti-Chinese demonstrations while it was attempting to extricate the handful of Indonesian diplomats still in Peking. Some students are being detained and interrogated. The Chinese Communists have refused to grant exit visas to Indonesian diplomatic representatives remain- ing in the capital and are apparently holding them as hostages. The student attack on the Chinese Embassy may trigger retaliatory demonstrations in Peking and make it more difficult for Djakarta to get its officials home? 2 Oct 67 5 25X1 Approved For R . 75A0104000100014 25X1 25X1 Approved For Release 2002/10/25 : CIA-RDP79T00975A010400010001-4 Approved For Release 2002/10/25 : CIA-RDP79T00975A010400010001-4 Top Secreted For Release 2002/10/25 : CIA-RDP79T00975A010400010001-4 Top Secret Approved For Release 2002/10/25 : CIA-RDP79T00975A010400010001-4
