*Communist China - France: The Chinese Com-
munists are stepping up pressure to bring about a
break in relations between France and Nationalist
China.
Peiping's official statement of 28 January declares
flatly that it negotiated the agreement to establish
relations with the French as the sole legal govern-
ment of China. The statement argues that by rec-
ognizing Peiping the French agree that Taipei's dip-
lomats in Paris can no longer be regarded as repre-
senting China. Peiping implies that agreement with
Paris on recognition and the exchange of ambassadors
was based on this understanding.
By harshly restating their claim to sovereignty
over the island, the Chinese attempted to slam the
door on the possibility that the French might try to
evade the dilemma by recognizing the GRC as gov-
ernment of Taiwan.
Peiping's statement has been followed by an an-
nouncement carried by the semiofficial French news
service AFP that the Chinese have named a charge
to fill the Paris post.
