A curfew has been imposed in Aleppo. The government also has shut down two local newspapers sympathetic to Nasir and has tem- against the Damascus government, claiming that "all the people of all classes" in Syria are calling for the downfall of the Baathist regime`. /j op-level Syrian delegations, meanwhile, have gon to Egypt and Iraq, presumably in an effort to resolve the crisis without destroying such progress as has been made toward developing a federation of the three states (A Cairo broadcast reported this morning that the delegation to Egypt returned to Damascus and "no a reement has been reached on many matters: &airo radiobroadcasts have stepped up pressure Approved For Re ease 2003,08,05. (105,800 n.m.) and that an attempt to correct the trajectory to bring it closer to Mars had failed. Photographs taken from such a distance would at best be of marginal scien- tific value here also is an indication that Mars 1 is not communicating satisfactorily. There has been no announcement of communications with Mars 1 since a contact was reported during the week of 17-25 Marc 25X1 9 May 63 DAILY BRIEF 6 0 Approved For 75AO07000130001-9 j j IBM Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO07000130001-9 HAILAND South Vlptnam Seel '' 'NORTH BORNEO ' Colvhe., Sea \3 _L.9SNGAPbR SUMATRA(-,? Indonesia's objective at the talks is to secure a postponement of the formation of Malaysia, now scheduled for 31 August, or at least to make it ap- pear that Malaysia's principal promoter, Malayan Prime Minister Rahman, is the intransigent party. Rahman has. said publicly that he would not even consider postponement. 25X1 /Andonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Suwito re- cen y stated that if Malaya will not "cooperate" with Indonesia, Djakarta "would have to settle the matter in its own way' Sukarno is reported to have given orders in mi April to increase Indonesia's military support for anti- Malaysia groups in the Borneo ter- ritories. At the same time, he intends to maintain an outward pose of using only peaceful means at least until after the foreign ministers' meeting. The Philippines has collaborated with Indonesia in diplomatic and propaganda activity against Malay- sia, but Manila has stopped short of using covert military action. j j j 9 May 63 DAILY BRIEF j 25X1 Approved For R lease 2003/08/05: CIA-RDP79TO 975AO07000130001-9 j . ~rrrrrrrr~rrr~~rr~~rrrr~////Or~rr~/O/rrrrrrrrrrr~Orrrrr ~rrrrrrrrrr~rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Approved For Re A00700013002VX1 25X1 Per, u: Peru is unhappy with the sponsorship of the denuclearization pact for Latin America recently proposed by Mexico and will not support it unless stringent conditions are met. A Peruvian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Peru would insist that all Latin American nations, including Cuba, be parties to the agreement, and that the agreement provide for adequate inspection and verification procedures. Peru is consulting with Argentina, Colombia, and Uruguay inan effort to arrive at a common position. Brazil is co-sponsoring the proposal, and Bo- livia, Chile, and Ecuador have endorsed it. The Peruvian spokesman pointed out to the US Embassy at Lima that all except Ecuador maintain diplomatic relations with Cuba, and that there are powerful leftist parties in. all five nations. He speculated that the proposal may have strong neutralist undertones and could have been inspired partly by domestic political considerations in the sponsoring countries. He said the Peruvian Government "could not under- stand" why it was not consulted before the proposal I . was publicly announced. 9May63 DAILY BRIE F 25X1 j Approved For Rel ase 2003108105 : - 5A007000130001-9 25X1 j j ~ww Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975A007000130001-9 O ISLA DE MARGARITA FERRYMAR III TOBK.) at Port of Spai n La Asuncion 25X1 6305089 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/08/05 : CIA-RDP79T00975A007000130001-9 9 W y 63 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE BULLETIN Map 0 now at Port-of -Spain,, Trini Ir *Venezuela:)l The Venezuelan ship, Ferrymar III, which imiy -be caL~Prying a small amount of arms des- tined for Venezuelan rebels, will arrive at the Ven- ezuelan island of A&rgarita in the next two or three Arg.
