He said Cuba would soon formally propose the estab- lishment of diplomatic relations with Trinidad, and that Cuba will be giving scholarships in "agricultural and technical training" to Trinidad citizens. In Jamaica, the first public pro-Castro, anti- US demonstration took place on 6 September in King- ston. It was sponsored by the newly formed Com- munist-front "Friends of Cuba Committee" and planned and directed by the Cuban consul resident in Kingston. An estimated 300 to 400 generally sym- pathetic Jamaicans attended and further meetings were promis ~au tic ties. While the Jamaican Government is basically protea and is concerned about the potential subver- sive threat from neighboring Cuba, the presence of some 40,000 Jamaicans in Cuba has led to a some- what vacillating public attitude. In Trinidad, Prime Minister Williams, although anti-US, is also anti- Communist and he may turn down Cuba's overtures for the exchange of students and the establishment 11 Sept 6 2 25X1 j Approved For Rele se 2003/04/17 :CIA-RDP79T0097 i 800080001-0 25X1 Approved For Release 2003/04/17 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO06600080001-0 Next 1 Page(s) In Document Exempt Approved For Release 2003/04/17 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO06600080001-0 j Approved F elea 2003/04/17: CIA-RDP79TO09 100080001-0 I 25X1 j Laos:1Souvanna Phouma, in an effort to drum up popular support for the coalition, plans to tour several rightist-held towns in central and southern Laos this week. He will be accompanied by General Phoumi and possibly Souphannouvong. Souvanna has expressed confidence that later he wou visit such Pathet Lao strongholds as Sam Neua, Tchepone, and Nam Tha. He has not specified when or indicated whether any rightist elements would ac- company him, nor is it certain that the Pathet Lao will allow him to make the trip. They still show no inclination to open up their territory and are continu- ing efforts to consolidate their control in the country- side. 25X1 11 Sept 62 DAILY BRIEF iv ji, n .............d F 7nn4/nA/47 ? CIA ono79Tnn P,1/CJVt600n8nnn4 n R l or e ase Ghana: The explosion which occurred on 9 Sep- tember during a loyalty demonstration near Nkrumah's residence in Accra appears to have been an act of ter- rorism designed to unnerve Nkrumah. 25X1 The incident may have been the work of the same group which attempted to kill Nkrumah last month. r-There are reports that the previous attack on Nkrumah was staged by extremist Ghanaian opposition elements who had received a supply of grenades and rifles from Togo and that this group intended to continue their cam- roai~n against Nkrumah_ Syria: Another political crisis may be brewing. A group of old-line politicians, led by former Pre- mier Khalid al-Azm, is pressing for power and is being opposed by the army. Key officers distrust Azm and regard him as excessively opportunistic. In 1957 he was a leading proponent of close relations with the Soviet bloc. His main motive seems to be personal ambition. 125X1 25X1 11 Sept 62 DAILY BRIEF v j Approved For Rel ase 2003/04/17 : CIA-RDP79T00975 0d080001-0 Approved F Release 2003/04/17 : CIA-RDP79T00975AO066000 0001-0 25X1 THE PRESIDENT The Vice President Executive Offices of the White House Special Counsel to the President Military Representative of the President The Special Assistant for National Security Affairs The Scientific Adviser to the President The Director of the Budget The Director, Office of Emergency Planning The Director, National Aeronautics and Space Administration The Department of State The Secretary of State The Under Secretary of State The Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs The Deputy Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs The Counselor and Chairman of the Policy Planning Council The Director of Intelligence and Research The Treasury Department The Secretary of the Treasury The Under Secretary of the Treasury The Department of Defense The Secretary of Defense The Deputy Secretary of Defense The Secretary of the Army The Secretary of the Navy The Secretary of the Air Force The Assistant Secretary of Defense (International Security Affairs) The Assistant Secretary of Defense The Chairman, The Joint Chiefs of Staff Chief of Naval Operations, United States Navy Chief of Staff, United States Air Force Chief of Staff, United States Army Commandant, United States Marine Corps U.S. Rep., Military Committee and Standing Group, NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Europe Commander in Chief, Pacific The Director, Defense Intelligence Agency The Director, The Joint Staff The Director for Intelligence, The Joint Staff The Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Department of Army The Director of Naval Intelligence, Department of Navy The Assistant Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Department of the Air Force The Department of Justice The Attorney General The Federal Bureau of Investigation The Director The Atomic Energy Commission The Chairman The National Security Agency The Director The United States Information Agency The Director The National Indications Center The Director Approvfcl or a ease - 80001-0 25X1 Approved For Releas1'3p4/1SEC T00975A0N600080001-0
