USATC 200 Sheet 0493-22HL, 3rd ed, Feb 64, Scale 1:200,000 (SECRET CONTROLLED DISSEM) LATEST IMAGERY USED NEGATION DATE (If required) N/A ABSTRACT Although Nan-chang 320 is the smallest of Communist China's airframe plants, it is important because of its light aircraft and probable SSN-2 (Styx) cruise missile production. AN-2 (Colt) and YAK-18 (Max) utility and liaison aircraft have been produced at this plant since the late 1950's and are apparently still in production as evidenced by the continuing presence of both types of aircraft. The presence of nine Styx missile crates at the plant on August 1966 photography indicated that Nan-chang 320 was China's production site for this missile. No Styx crates were visible at the plant on the previous coverage of May 1965, but since August 1966 they have been observed in in- creasing numbers. To date, this plant has had the least expansion of any of China's air- frame plants. Only four major buildings have been constructed since the plant was first observed on photography in September 1956. At that time it contained approximately three-fourths its present floor space of 1.9 million square feet. NOTE: This report has been published as an interim Basic Imagery Interpretation Report with the concurrence of the Defense Intelligence Agency. - 1 - TOP SECRET Approved For Release 2008/05/15: CIA-RDP79TOO909AO01100010004-0 RCS 11/0003/69 25X1 25X1 WAC PIC 25X1 049-25D Approved For Release 2008/05/15: CIA-RDP79TOO909AO01100010004-0 TOP SECRE Nan-chang Airframe Plant is located in Kiangsi Province at 28-38-05N 115-54-59E, approximately two nautical miles south of the city of Nan-chang. The plant is served by road and by a spur of the Shanghai to Chu-chou rail line. BASIC DESCRIPTION When first observed in September 1956, Plant 320 contained approximately 1.4 million square feet of floor space. All major construction and expansion of the plant were completed between September 1956 and June 1962. The plant presently (June 1968) contains 1.9 million square feet of floor space. Fig- ure 3 and its accompanying table provide a detailed functional and dimen- sional analysis of the plant's facilities. The adjacent Nan-chang Airfield New is the test and flyaway field for the airframe plant. The airfield has a north-northeast/south-southwest, serviceable concrete runway, consisting of a by 230-fo6t-wide 25X1 older portion and a 2950-fooHfoot-wide ex ension. It also has a 25X1 concrete taxiway, one parking apron, three maintenance aprons, a compass rose, and a test revetment. The test revetment now serves as a small arms range. The plant has been a producer of light aircraft since the late 1950's, with AN-2 (Colt) and YAK-18 (Max) utility and liaison aircraft having been observed there since 1956. The photography indicates that Nan-chang 320 probably began production of SSN-2 (Styx) cruise missiles sometime between May 1965 and August 1966 when Styx missile crates were first present at the plant. Since then Styx missile crates have been observed on all subsequent good-quality coverage in increasing numbers.
