The Situation in South Vietnam

1. The US Embassy reports that Hue was quiet
on the morning of 28 May (Vietnam time) . The bonzes
who were :tasting in front of the Consulate yester-
day are continuing their hunger strike at one of the
pagodas. Radio Hue continued its bombast against US
support of the Ky-Thieu government and announced that
various groups would meet today and tomorrow. The
radio made the claim that the USIS library was burned
in defiance of the "degenerate" American culture which
is replacing the Vietnamese culture.
General Cao's Comments on Ky-Thi Meeting

Ky offered General Thi his old job as I Corps com-
mander when they met yesterday at Chu Lai. When Thi
refused, Ky offered him the post of defense minister,

3. The press reports that a group of approxi-
mately 1,000 Buddhists, children, and teen-agers
demonstrating against the government left the Bud-
dhist Institute today and marched into Cholon, the
Chinese section of the capital, where it was dis-
persed by riot police without incident. The mayor

of Saigon at a city council meeting reportedly warned
demonstrators that the government might augment its
"moderate" methods of riot control with odor, vomit,
and diarrhea gas grenades if the marches continue.
