All personnel in the US Consulate building in Hue have been evacuated. The remaining American officials and communications equipment were trans- ferred to the USMAG compound early this evening (Vietnam time). 2. The US Consul reported that the government troops assigned to protect the Consulate "seemed to be clearly aligned with the struggle forces." Press reports had indicated earlier that the unit commander, Colonel Khoa, had abandoned his post and left the city. 3. The monks who had been conducting a hunger strike in front of the Consulate left their positions when the US personnel departed. There is no report that the Consulate building has been entered and the USMAG has stated that the situation in Hue is quiet. 4. The NMCC reports that the MAG complement at Hue includes approximately 250 US military personnel. A press report has stated that heavy machine guns were seen being brought into the compound. The total US military force in the Hue/Phu Bi complex includes 7,000 men. ARMY and DOS review(s) completed. JCS review(s) completed.
