Approved For Release 2,Vp M.L26A000100010066-2 OCI No. 0766/66 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Office of Current Intelligence 15 January 1966 Situation in the Dominican Republic (Report as of 3:00 pm EST) 1. There have been no signs that progress has been made in effecting Caamano's exist from the coun- try. The uneasy calm is continuing. 2, The Brazilian government has formally noti- fied the OAS that Major General Alvaro da Silva Braga has been appointed to replace General Hugo Panasco Alvim as Commander of the Inter-American Peace Force (IAPF). Braga is expected to arrive in the Dominican Republic on 16 January and assume com- mand the following day. The change has been planned for some time and has no relationship to the present crisis. It is hoped, however, that Braga will aid in easing the presently estranged relationship between the IAPF and the OAS Committee. Concurrent with the change in IAPF leadership, Lieutenant General Bruce Palmer will step down as Deputy Commander of the IAPF and Commander of US forces in the Dominican Republic. He will be replaced by Brigadier General Robert Linvill, who has been serving as Palmer's deputy since May. CONFIDENTIAL Approved For Release 2006/01/17 : CIA-RDP79T00826A000100010066-2
