Approved For Release 2006/01/5JJR00826A000100010056-3 OCI No. 0473/66 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Office of Current Intelligence 10 January 1966 The Dominican Republic Situation Report Report as oV : M T 1. The extremist-sponsored general strike was partially successful. today. By mid-afternoon several government offices had no workers on duty and others were operating with skeleton staffs. Small meetings were held in several sections of Santo Domingo to distribute pamphlets and to agitate for the strike, and there were isolated disturbances and acts of violence. A US sergeant fatally wounded a Dominican who was attacking another US soldier. With the ex- ception of La Romana, all the sugar mill unions in the eastern part of the country had reportedly joined the strike. 2. The strike, now scheduled to last 72 hours, may pick up tomorrow. Many workers are expected to stay home to avoid possible violence, while others will probably join the strike because they share its anti-military, pro-constitutionalist sentiments. Of- ficials of the Labor Ministry expect absenteeism among their employees to reach almost 80 percent tomorrow.
