Approved For Release 2006/01/ 0826A000100010050-9 OCI No. 0471/66 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Office of Current Intelligence 9 January 1966 INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM Situation in the Dominican Republic (Report as of , pm T 1. The Dominican stalemate continues with none of the parties -- President, military chiefs, or rebel leaders willing either to back down or to initiate forcible action against the others. 2. Immediate interest still centers on the general strike called for tomorrow by extreme leftist groups. .e strike's planners apparently have moved beyond demanding the departure of the military chiefs and will insist as 25X1 well that "Caamano must stay". However, Juan Bosch's Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) still opposes the strike 3. Angel Liz, President of the Central Electoral Com- mission, has visited the Army Chief of Staff and Defense Minister, urging them to obey the Presidential order sending them out of the country. The military chiefs continue to insist that the rebel leaders included in the order must leave first, after which the military will be willing to "discuss" the situation with the President. Military leaders probably are counting on the Inter American Peace Force's refusing to coa erate in an move to force them out of the country.
