1. I I the army
now fears that even an agreement by Sukarno to ban the PKI
might only be a prelude to a ban on all political parties and
the creation of a single national party, in which former PKI
members would assume positions of leadership.
2. As a result, General Nasution is said to be considering
a proclamation of national emergency authorizing the army to re-
place Sukarno's palace guard with regular army troops and 25X1
rendering Sukarno virtually incommunicado. The army would then
set up an acceptable civilian authority, apparently retaining
Sukarno as a figurehead.

A Djakarta
newspaper reports that the purge being conducted against supporters
of the abortive coup is being extended to representatives of the
Indonesian government abroad.

5. The American Embassy has received information that
10 cases of U.S.-made rifles may soon arrive in Djakarta by
ship, destined for Foreign Minister Subandrio, It is speculated
that instead of distributing them Subandrio may plan to try to
implicate the U.S. in running guns into Indonesia.
