INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM
The Situation in Indonesia
(Report #57 As o 4.00 P.M. EST)
1. Sukarno made his expected Heroes Day speech today, in
the course of which he attacked the US for passing out money for
anti-Indonesian activities. This is the same accusation he
made at his 6 November cabinet session. The speech itself was
relatively mild, but Sukarno made it clear that'he was not going
to take army charges against the PKI lying down, that he was
going to defend close associates such as Foreign Minister
Subandrio from army charges, and that he was going to appeal for 25X1
a return to the status quo ante over the head of the army.
3. A private discussion between a US Embassy official and
an official of the Foreign Ministry indicates that the army is
apparently attempting to "finish off" Sukarno as well as the
PKI and Subandrio. This action, the-Indonesian-official thought,
would. take some time. The official also sought, through the US
Embassy, to warn the British not to complicate the army's task 25X1
by taking advantage of the situation in Borneo and elsewhere.

5. the cities
in Central Java are now secure but the countryside is still
turbulent. I the army should have little
difficulty clearing the relatively flat country around Solo
but may have more trouble on the slopes of Merapi volcano--
where the PKI is strong and PKI leader Aidit is believed to
be hiding.
