INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM The Indonesian Situation (Report. - As of A.M. EDT) 1. First Deputy Prime Minister Subandrio has publicly alluded to the official Communist Party state- ment of 5 October that it was not involved in the 30 September movement. The army had apparently tried to suppress the statement; Subandrio may well have been the party's channel for surfacing it. The army had hoped to gather strong evidence of Communist complicity while the party was still officially silent in order to Justify to Sukarno the need for strong anti-Communist actions 4. A German physician saw Sukarno socially for a half hour on 5 October. He told the US Embassy that he observed nothing unusual in the president's mental or physical condition and judged him to be in full control of his faculties.
