CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Office of Current Intelligence 3 October 1965 INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM The Indonesian Situation (Report - As of : x. m. EDT) 1. After almost two days of political confusion, President Sukarno has apparently re-established his authority over the government and armed forces of Indonesia. His first public statement since the unsuccessful coup attempt of the leftist- oriented '"30 September Movement" has been followed by an out- pouring of pledges of loyalty to him by the country's principal military and civilian leaders, including Air Force Chief.Dani who earlier supported the coup. No loyalty statement has yet 25X1 come from Indonesian Communist Party (PI#I) leaders. 3. The US Embassy reports that Djakarta is quiet with Suharto's regular army forces firmly in control. Medan and Surabaja are also reported to be quiet. However, Suharto's headquarters remains concerned about dissident units of Central Java's Diponegoro Division which may still control parts of that province including the major cities of Semarang and Jogjakarta, and armed clashes involving these troops may have occurred. There has also been some shooting between Suharto's forces and small Communist paramilitary bands near Djakarta and Bandung Approved 0040006-6 25X1 4.
