Colonel Untung, leader of the initial coup, to surrender by The Army Information ($enter, under Suharto's command, has announced that six generals;-including former, Army Commander Yani--were kidnapped by Untung's coup group. The announcement gave no details as to their whereabouts or condition. Army sources avail- able to the US,Embassy, however,' report that at least two generals were killed by Untung's group and: that several, others, !including,Yani, were severely wounded and carried away. defense Minister General Nasution is,said to have been wounded'. He escaped, ' however,' and ah army communique states that he was brougkt to safety. Ac- cording to another report, he is'in the'rrprotective custody" of Suharto. Suharto represents himself and his followers-- apparently quite sincerely--as having been constantly loyal and "recognizing only Sukarno as the great leader of the revolution." Suharto has accused State Dept. review(s) completed. Approved F Approved Fo Untung of having attempted an anti-Sukarno move, there is no firm indication, however, that this was the case. The army has reaffirmed that Sukarno is in a "sound and healthy condition." Ja regional "Revo- lutionary Council" had ben established in Medan in line with Untung's Djakarta action. The-army is apparently preparing to confront this regional council--if it still exists--and to take action against the Communists at the same time. ITheUS Consulate in Medan reports that'the PKI is not visible in the area. Presumably Communist elements are preparing themselves for possible army attacks against them.
