The Indonesian Situation

Major General Suharto, the countercoup leader,
reportedly has issued an ultimatum to Lt. Colonel
Untung, leader of the initial coup, to surrender by
The Army Information ($enter, under Suharto's
command, has announced that six generals;-including
former, Army Commander Yani--were kidnapped by Untung's
coup group. The announcement gave no details as to
their whereabouts or condition. Army sources avail-
able to the US,Embassy, however,' report that at least
two generals were killed by Untung's group and: that
several, others, !including,Yani, were severely wounded
and carried away.

have been wounded'. He escaped, ' however,' and ah army
communique states that he was brougkt to safety. Ac-
cording to another report, he is'in the'rrprotective
custody" of Suharto.
Suharto represents himself and his followers--
apparently quite sincerely--as having been constantly
loyal and "recognizing only Sukarno as the great
leader of the revolution." Suharto has accused
State Dept. review(s) completed.

Untung of having attempted an anti-Sukarno move,
there is no firm indication, however, that this was
the case. The army has reaffirmed that Sukarno is
in a "sound and healthy condition."
Ja regional "Revo-
lutionary Council" had ben established in Medan
in line with Untung's Djakarta action. The-army is
apparently preparing to confront this regional
council--if it still exists--and to take action
against the Communists at the same time.
ITheUS Consulate in Medan reports that'the PKI
is not visible in the area. Presumably Communist
elements are preparing themselves for possible army
attacks against them.
