The Indonesian Situation
(Report - As of 11:00 AM EDT)
A counter move under the leadership of army Major General
Suharto appears to have occurred in Indonesia. Only hours
after the 30 September movement announced the membership of
a leftist "Revolution Council," the Djakarta Domestic Radio
announced that the "Indonesian army had retaken the Djakarta
radio station, the 30 September movement is counter-revolu-
tionary, Sukarno is safe, and the army is under the command
of Major General Suharto."
Suharto is a somewhat questionable figure. He is deputy
commander of the anti-Malaysia joint military command and has 25X1
been generally regarded as apolitical and an opportunist.
Events in the present situation so far, however, seem to indicate
at least a strong service loyalty on his part.
There is no news as to the whereabouts or condition of
former Army Commander General Yani and little about Defense
Minister General Nasution. One press item attributed the
smashing of Lt. Colonel Untung's coup to Nasution but most
items give credit to Suharto. The Djakarta radio has an-
nounced that Nasution is safe,

reports on the two coups--that o the September movement
and the counter coup of General Suharto--have commented that
Sukarno is well and safe. A broadcast out of Kuala Lumpur
states that he is dead, but this seems.likely to be based in
speculation.
The US Embassy in Djakarta commented early on 1 October
that the possibility must not be ruled out that Sukarno may
have died or suffered an attack which makes it impossible
for him to run the government. Although there is no real
evidence as to his condition, no announcement to date has
been issued in Sukarno's name.
