Approved For Release 2007/03/075 T79T00472 01400050026-1 OCI No. 1949/65 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Office of Current Intelligence 14 June 1965 INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM Situation in the Dominican Republic (Report #276 - As of 7:00 am EDT Loyalist forces, bolstered by their success- ful mass rally yesterday, are alert for possible pro-rebel disturbances today, the sixth anniversary of the Cuban-backed attempt to oust the Trujillo dictatorship. Yesterday's mass rally sponsored by the Imbert regime was impressive by any standard. There were many thousands of participants--some sources es- timate as high as 30,000--and the overwhelming pro- portion of them were of the working class. In numbers and in the enthusiasm of the participants, the rally rivaled the large rebel demonstration of 5 June. The rebel rally which had been scheduled for the same time yesterday as the loyalists' was post- poned until today. It is to be under the auspices of the rebels' political organization--the Front of Democratic Constitutional Organizations--and is likely to feature memorial statements on the martyrs of 14 June 1959 as well as expressions of popular support for the present rebel struggle. There are other signs of growing friction be- tween moderate rebel leaders and the pro-Castro Four- teenth of June Political Group (APCJ) and other State Dept. review completed Approved For Release 20 001400050026-1 " Approved For RJase 2007/03/0SE R ff P79T00472A51400050026-1 extremist groups, which have become increasingly blatant in their activities during the past week. Further signs of rebel disunity were apparent in the unauthorized visit to the top OAS representatives in Santo Domingo on Saturday by the president of the rebel senate and a rebel cabinet officer. They stressed their great desire for an early political settlement, suggested that revisions of the 1963 con- stitution could facilitate a solution, and said that they agree that the solving of the Communist problem is a necessity. On the latter point, the two rebel emissaries told Secretary General Mora and Ambassador Bunker that they would need US and OAS help on the Communist issue, since "the constitutionalist side" lacks the necessary experience.
