(Report #183 - As of 11:00 am EDT
OCI No. 164.9/65
NOTE: The next report of the Situation in the Dominican Republic
will be issued at 1:00 pm EDT. Thereafter we will issue Situation
Reports regularly at 5:00 pm, 9:00 pm, 5:00 am, 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.
Spot items of significance will be issued separately.
1. A US government team reports on its visit yesterday to
the north coast port city of Puerto Plata. The team was well
received by all officials of the local governor's office, the
police and army commands. There was no indication of any signifi-
cant rebel sentiment in the town. The food supplies appeared
adequate, although there are some shortages and prices are rising.
Gasoline is very scarce and when found is at least two dollars a
gallon. It has previously been reported by US teams visiting
other parts of the country that local merchants have been raising
their prices on needed foodstuffs and a priest from San Pedro de
Macoris said that the food prices were so high there as to make
it impossible for the poorer people to buy any.
