Approved For Release 1999/09/08 CIA-RDP79SO1046A000800050002-7 ail REFERENCES IN SOVIET PUBLICATIONS TO PRODUCTION OF TRACTORS AT DNEPROPETROVSK* There is no known reference in a Soviet publication that pinpoints 25X1 DAZ by name as a producer of tractors.1 A 25X1C 25X1 C In addi- tion, there are a number of other Soviet publications that specifically identify the city of Dnepropetrovsk as the location of a plant produc- ing Belarus' tractors. The publications cited below date from 1955 to late 1960. A. 1955 A spare parts catalog for row-crop tractors published in 1955 con- tained the following notations 35/: 1. The D08SO1 oil pump was installed on Belarus' tractors produced at MTZ up to 1955. The D08SOlA oil pump had been installed on all Belarus' tractors produced at the plant 25X1C 2. The D11SOlG water pump was installed on Belarus tractors produced at MTZ beginning with the fourth Quarter of 1 4 and on all Belarus' tractors produced at the plant 25X1C 3. For part number D24SOlB assigned to the PD-10 starting motor assembly, there is a footnote which states that starting motor No. 36-1015510 is being installed on the Belarus' tractors produced at MTZ. Parts D24Sll and D24S16A are being replaced in motor No. 36- 1015510 by parts 36-1015530 and 36-1015520, respectively. On the Belarus' tractors produced by the plant a 25X1C modernized starting motor, D24SO1V, is being installed. * Publications of 1954 and 1956 referred to the fact that MTZ was not the only plant producing Belarus' tractors. 36/ These indirect refer- ences to production outside Minsk have not been included in this Appen- dix. Omitted as well are two 1960 references 37/ that discussed the Belarus' E-50 high-speed wheeled tractor without relating it to a par- ticular plant, even though the nature of the articles was such that it might have been expected that the plant would have been named. The producers of the other tractor models mentioned in the articles were named. The E-50 is connected with DAZ by two Soviet publications, as indicated in this Appendix. The tractor was equipped with a 50-hp SMD-l engine. i+0/ (The SMD-l- is a Serp i Molot diesel produced by the Serp i Molot Plant in Khar'kov.) Field tests were run on this tractor in 1959 in Omskaya Oblast and in the Kuban'. Three E-50 tractors were used in the tests in Omskaya Oblast. Li 25X1 C that cylinder block cast- ings are machined at the Novgorod Machinery and Repair Plant for in- stallation in Belarus' tractors produced at the Dnepropetrovsk Trac- tor Plant. !+2/ A Soviet English-language newspaper reported in October 1959 in a discussion of agricultural developments in the Ukrainian SSR that the Belarus' Plant had scrapped its plans for production of the older models of tractors and was going to switch over in 1960 to production of "the speedier type of wheeled tractor." / Presumably this ref- erence is to the E-50 high-speed wheeled tractor mentioned in an earlier paragraph in the same article. E. 1960 25X1 C that 120 tractors from Dnepropetrovsk had arrived there that day. )4i-/ The Ural'sk area was to receive 1,000 tractors of various makes in 1960, but the report did not indicate the share to be supplied by Dnepro- petrovsk. Among the more than 150 engineer- mechanics who attended the seminar were "engineer-designers of the Kharkov, Minsk, and Dnepropetrovsk tractor plants."
