1. Although the explorers of 13 different nations have, at one
time or another, asserted discovery claims in various parts of
the Antarctic continent, only seven nations at present maintain
official claims. These are (ma,p):
A. The UK - - Fa,lkia.nd Islands Dependency (1908) : ma.p, top right,
B. Argentina. - - overlapping UK claim. (da.te about 1942) : ma,p,
V. Australia. - - Antarctic Territory (1923-33) : ma.p, bottom.

Norway - - Queen Maud Land (1939) : ma.p, right; plus two
islands.
D. New Zealand - - Ross Dependency (1923) : rna.p, left (the scene
top right,
Chile - - partial overlap of both Argentine and UK claim
(da.te 1940) : map, top.
F ra.nce - - small enclave in Australian claim (1938) : ma-p,
bottom left.
!I., Present Soviet a.ctivity is centered on the Abmw Coast a.rea. (ma.p,
bottom), about in the middle of the Australian-claimed Antarctic
Territory.
A. Located on insert are two of the three present Soviet per-
ma.nent bases, Mirnyy and Oa.zis.
