Dear George:
September 27, 1976
I note on page 10 of the attached transcript of your remarks
that at the conclusion of the speech in Williamsburg at the
CBS Affiliates Convention the person doing the transcribing
noted "Tumultuous Applause." On page 16, at the conclusion
of the question-and-answer period there is the notation
"Great Prolonged Applause."
I think those notations indicate better than anything else
how appreciative your audience was of your appearance and of
your remarks. Those of us with CBS are so grateful to you --
you truly provided the highlight of what turned out to be a
most successful Convention.
We are also deeply grateful to you for honoring us with your
presence on such short notice.
George, I am enclosing the transcript of your remarks in
Williamsburg to ask if .you will edit them as you see fit,
as we would like to publish for distribution to our affili-
ates and selected community leaders your remarks, Arthur
Taylor's remarks, Dick Salant's remarks, Charlie Kuralt's
speech, etc. If this meets with your approval and if you'll
be kind enough to do the editing job, we'll take it from
there. We have had many, many requests for copies of your
talk.
It was very nice seeing you.and Mrs. Bush again and, again,
our very deep thanks.
Cordially,
The Honorable George Bush

Dear Mr. Falkiewicz:
A subsidiary company of ours, American Heritage
Publishing Company, which publishes AMERICAN HERITAGE, is
planning to run an article by Thomas Braden on the founding
of the CIA, in the magazine's February 1977 issue. We
believe that responsible articles on the CIA are of interest
and value to our readers and would like to publish additional
ones. However, we recognize that this is a sensitive subject
and therefore we would like to work in concert with the Agency
on any future articles.
With this in mind, I asked George Bush's brother,
John, a personal friend of mine, whether he would enquire as
to the feasibility of my request. He replied, presumably
after discussing the issue with his brother, that if there
was anything to be done I should approach you on this matter-
To demonstrate the quality of AMERICAN HERITAGE,
I am enclosing a recent issue for your benefit. I am also
enclosing a copy of our current catalogue which further
demonstrates the scope of our products.
If this subject is of interest to you, Alvin Josephy,
Editor of AMERICAN HERITAGE, and I would be happy to meet
with, you at your convenience.

Many thanks for the wonderful hospitality extended
by the CIA to the Young Presidents Washington Con-
ference. Your personal presentation did much to
give our attendees a far deeper understanding of the
mission, complexity, candor and competence of your
Agency. In addition, the men who joined you on the
program added still further to these points while
demonstrating an enormous knowledge and perspective
in their areas of expertise.
Enclosed is a copy of the final program. The con-
ference was exceedingly successful and your enormous
contribution is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
A.-Barry Merkin

Mr. George Bush
Director
Central Intelligence Agency
Washington, D. C. 20503
Our warmest thanks and appreciation for your excellent contribution to our
Young Presidents' Organization Conference last weekend in Washington.
Having heard not only your positive comments, but also the penetrating
analysis on China and the USSR, I and the rest of the group realize that our
visit with you was far too brief.
Many of us are in business in many parts of the world and I would hate
been fascinated to hear more. (My company for example is the the management
education business in nearly 20 foreign countries now).
As Education Chairman for the Conference, my job was made immeurably
easier because of your support and cooperation. YPO in general, and I speci-
fically, have received unanamously positive comments on every part of 'our
program. You made this happen. We were merely the catalysts.
Hopefully, the many significant thoughts, observations and years of
experience you.-.and the other resources put forth will be used productively.
And, more importantly, that we, working together, helped to motivate 300
men and women of influence into taking some positive action themselves
towards a better America.
We thank you !
