Per Capita US Aid to Various Countries
In the two fiscal years 1974 and 1975, the US provided
a total of $3.4 billion of economic and military aid to
Israel. This aid amounted to about $515 per person per
year, much more than any other recipient of US aid since
1949.
South Vietnam ranks second in per capita aid. During
fiscal years 1972 and 1973, US economic and military aid
to South Vietnam peaked at $5.6 billion. This aid amounted
to about $150 per person per year in current dollars. In
terms of 1975 dollars it would be $190.
Laos, with a population about equal to Israel's (3 million
people), is in third place. The per capita US aid reached
$140 during fiscal years 1972 and 1973, in 1975 dollars..
Taiwan on the same basis received peak aid of $100 per capita
per year in 1975 dollars. For example, the highest European
recipient is France at $45 per capita.
.By contrast, the Less Developed Countries on the average
are now receiving about $10 per capita from all foreign
governments and international organizations. The range
around this number is very large but individual country
figures rarely top $100 per capita. For example, the 1975
figure for India is $4 per capita and Egypt $60. Jordan,
with a population of only 1.8 million, is now receiving total
_aid of about $250 per capita.
