Throughout East Pakistan, the Indians main- tain the initiative and are rapidly fragmenting the Pakistani forces. They claim to have crossed the ma River at at least two points and to have cap- east of Dacca, and assert that Dacca is virtually encircled. In the West Pakistan-Indian area, the Pakistani advance against Chhamb has won the town. The Indians claim that several Pakistani attacks in the Poonch sector have been beaten back with heavy Pakistani casualties. The Indians continue to ad- 25X1 tared the town of Narayanganj some five miles south- in the Sind. but they have been virtually un- 25X1 25X1 5X1 2. The Pakistanis say they suspect that the at- tack on Karachi harbor on 9 December which damaged merchant ships was carried out by a Soviet missile submarine. The Pakistanis say they consider this possible because their aerial reconnaissance of the Karachi harbor area after the strike revealed no Indian OSA class missile patrol boats within 300 ilea of the area. India has announced limited bombing pauses over Karachi and Dacca to permit evacuation of foreign nationals. An Indian official in New Delhi stated that Dacca would not be bombed for a 24-.hour period from 6 p.m. local time on Friday. This time period will allow 14 hours for repair of the runway at Dacca and 10 hours, from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, for aircraft to arrive, load and depart. All planes participating in the evacuation must land before and after the stop at Dacca at the airport outside Calcutta. The Karachi airport, which has suffered little or no bomb damage, will be free from air strikes during the hours 8-?12 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
