Inclosed is the 1:250,000 scale map sheet of Darien Province prepared
under Project RAMP (Radar Mapping of Panama). Imagery was collected
with the AN/APQ-97 radar and the area was, as always, completely cloud
covered during the collection operation.
Compilation was a rather slow process because of failure of some of
the ancilliary collection gear and the necessity to devise substitute
techniques and computer programs to simulate the missing airborne
recordings.
The sheet has not been field checked and because of the problem mentioned
above we do not have a handle on the resulting map accuracy. Never-
theless, we feel that Class B can be attained once the ancilliary
collection problem is solved.
Contract arrangements have been completed with Westinghouse to allow
them to install the one existing AN/APQ-97 in a Gulfstream aircraft and
to offer radar collection services on a contract basis. DOD will have
first call on this service and our contracting officer will be advised
of any interested customers. We also are close to the award of a
contract to Westinghouse for radar collection of first, a test area in
the U.S., and then of several perennially cloud covered areas in Latin
America.
Let me know if you would like any further information.
Sincerely,
ARCHER M. WILSON
Chief Topographic Engineer
