MEM4RANUUM
SUBJECT: Y-Class Submarine Production
1. Since 22 May 1969, one Y-class submarine
has been launched, bringing the total to nine or
ten units launched to date.
2. The Y-class construction program began
at Severodvinsk in 1964 and nine units have been
launched there. Eight Y-class units are on the
assembly ways there at any one time. As one unit
is launched, assembly begins an another. It
takes about 18 months to assemble each unit..
3. Construction of Y-class submarines is
also underway at a yard in the Soviet Far East
and one unit probably has been launched from this
yard. This unit is included in the total given
by Secretary Laird. Three or four units could
be on the assembly ways at this yard. It takes
about 24 months to assemble each unit here.
4, A total of six to eight Y-class units
can be launched each year for the next few years.
