SUBJECT Imagery Restoration Study with
1. I have had an o ortunity to follow up on our telephone conver-
sation regarding the program reduction which you received in
the area of analog image restoration. As I understand it,,your staff
received the impression from OPPB that this program would be picked up
by ORD. I can confirm that we were unaware of this action and indeed
did not request funds for the project, since
previous coordination indicated that it was in the NPIC R&D program. As
you know, the work at is aimed at determining tech-
niques for correcting the phase of the transfer function of an aberrated
imaging system. Their'specific approach involves the storage of phase
information and subsequently, enhancing a two-dimensional image by means
of a hologram filter. This work entails complex spatial filtering tech-
niques, and accomplishments to date have been good, especially in.the
design and fabrication of hologram filters.
2. The study to date is promising and ORD
strongly recommends its continuation. Unfortunately, budget constraints
this year are such that we can find no possible way to reprogram funds
in ORD for this project.
3. I have taken the liberty of sending a copy of this memorandum
to OPPB for their information. I hope that the recently approved
combined R&D budget presentation will assist in preventing this type of
situation from arising in the future. 25X1
