Assassins of U.S. Official in Greece Strike Again
A former captain in the Greek security police, Evan-
ghelos Mallios, was shot down outside his Athens home by
unidentified assassins on 14 December and died shortly
afterwards. A leaflet left near the scene of the shooting
claimed responsibility in the name of the Revolutionary
Organization "17 November." The leaflet said the group had
executed Mallios as an example of the people's action against
torturers who were not adequately punished by the government.
Mallios had been convicted of torturing leftist political
prisoners during the seven-year period of military rule in
Greece, and served a ten-month prison sentence.
When U.S. embassy official Richard Welch was assas-
sinated in Athens in December 1975, persons identifying
themselves as members of the 17 November Organization called
a radio station and claimed responsibility.
The Greek police have announced that
ballistics tests indicate the same gun used to shoot Welch
was used in the Mallios assassination. Both victims were
shot at night by assassins who followed them home. The
Greek police have not concluded that the killers are actually
linked to the 17 November Organization, a loosely organized
group that takes its name from the date of a student uprising
in 1973. Its claim to have killed Welch was not taken very
seriously at the time by Greek authorities, but the group
probably will now become the target of an intensive police
investigation.

Pakistan Frees Attackers of Syrian Embassy
The Pakistani government has quietly released two
Palestinian students who were involved in the 11 October
nttnr-k on the rian embassy in :[slamabad.
Attributing its information to relic le
sources, the Reuter press agency said that no charges were 50X1-H UM
filed against the terrorists, both of whom were wounded in
the gun battle with embassy security guards and police.
Although the students said the attack was staged to avenge
Syrian intervention in the Lebanese civil war--the declared
mission of the Black June movement--no organization has
claimed sponsorship of the incident. (Black June did claim
credit for an attack on the Syrian embassy in Rome which
took place on the same day.) A third Palestinian student
was shot dead during the attack; all three had been studying
in Pakistan at the time. The two survivors, released after
several weeks in detention, have been allowed to return to
Lahore to continue their studies.
The government has made no statement about the students
or the incident. Observers had expected that the students
would be expelled from Pakistan, but sources close to the
government said such action could provoke more violence
against the Syrian embassy by the large Palestinian student
population in Pakistan. 50X1-HUM

Terrorist Executed for Attack on Amman Hotel
The only terrorist to survive the 17 November attack on
the Amman Intercontinental Hotel, Khayri Tawfict Khalil
Ibrahim Amir, was hanged at dawn on 18 December. He had
been badly wounded during the assault on the hotel by Jor-
danian forces. Three other terrorists were among eight
persons killed during the battle for control of the Inter-
continental.
The surviving terrorist, a native of the Israeli-
occupied West Bank, was a member of Sabri Al Banna's (Abu
Nidal) Black June movement. He is said to have provided the
Jordanian government with extensive information about that
organization. At his trial he was specifically charged with
having killed a Jordanian. soldier during the attack. On 9
December he was sentenced to death by the Supreme Securit
Court. His execution was not carried out in public.

Members of Jewish Defense League Sentenced
Four members of the Jewish Defense League were sentenced
to prison terms of up to six years on 16 December, and one
additional defendant received a suspended sentence. The
five JDL members were on trial for shooting into a Soviet
residential complex in Riverdale, New York on 27 February
1976; attempting to bomb the Soviet trading corporation in
New York City on 25 March; and shooting into the Soviet
United Nations mission on 2 April. The Jewish Armed Resist-
ance claimed responsibility for these incidents. This name
is used by the JDL to publicly claim responsibility for 50X1-HUM
terrorist acts. Russell Kelner, sentenced to three years
in prison, had previously been on probation for publicl
threatening the life of Yasir Arafat in November 1974.
