Greece Will Extradite Hijacker to Bulgaria
Greek officials have decided to extradite to Bulgaria
Dotsio Ivanov Gagov, the 28-year-old Bulgarian responsible for
the 28 June hijacking of a Balkan-Bulgarian Airlines aircraft
to Thessaloniki, Greece, according to a Greek newspaper. (See
the issue of 1 July.) Greek officials reportedly will reject
Gagov's political asylum request because they believe he has
mental problems. Gagov told police interrogators that he
attempted suicide by slashing his wrist three months ago while
under detention in Bulgaria for anti-government statements.
After this suicide attempt failed, he decided to hijack an
aircraft at the first opportunity. (UNCLASSIFIED)
Palestinian Bombing in Jerusalem
About 10 a.m. on 4 July a bomb planted inside a refrig-
erator exploded among a crowd of shoppers in Jerusalem killing
14 persons and injuring about 70 others. The bomb, consisting
of about 30 pounds of explosive, also damaged a number of
nearby buildings. Officials of the Palestine Liberation Or-
ganization have claimed responsibility for the bomb. On 7
July Israeli troops, jets and warships staged retaliatory
raids against suspected Palestinian terrorist bases in south-
ern Lebanon, killing 13 persons and destroying a number of
buildings. (UNCLASSIFIED)

Trial of Additional Baader-Meinhof Terrorists Begins in Hamburg
A second phase of the Baader-Meinhof trials began in
Hamburg on 30 June, when Gerhard Mueller and Irmgard Moeller
went on trial for their involvement in several terrorist acts,
including bombing attacks on U.S. military facilities in May
1972 which resulted in the death of four U.S. servicemen. Mueller
was arrested along with Ulrike Meinhof in June 1973. He disas-
sociated himself from the Baader-Meinhof group, however, in an
interview with the West German publication Stern, in which he
called Meinhof and Andreas Baader politically insane. Meinhof
and Baader are currently on trial in Stuttgart (see the 24 June
issue). (UNCLASSIFIED)

Nazi war criminal. His sentencing was set for 3 September.
Whitelaw was arrested earlier this year a short distance from
the home of John Artukovich in northern Los Angeles shortly

Costa Rican Embassy in Washington Bombed
On 18 July the Costa Rican Ambassador to the United
States narrowly escaped death or serious injury when a bomb,
planted against the embassy wall, exploded just three feet from
where he was standing. The bomb, which was hidden in the roots
of, ivy plants growing up the embassy wall, did little damage
and caused no injuries. Shortly after the explosion the United
Press International news bureau in Miami reported that a man
who identified himself as "The Cuban Scorpion called and
claimed credit for the bombing. The caller stated, "We are
responsible for the explosion at the Costa Rican Embassy.... Our
goal is to punish anyone who recognizes Cuba." The Associated
Press news bureau in Miami also received a call which was
substantially the same from a caller identifying himself as
"The Scorpion."
A group calling itself the Scorpion claimed credit for the
10 May bombings at the Aeroflot office and the Mexican Embassy
in Washington, D.C. Although it is not clear which Cuban exile
group is responsible for the explosion, the Cuban National
Liberation Front had been discussing possible attacks on Costa
Rican targets, which were to take place during the OAS meeting
in San Jose. (See the 15 July issue.) A detailed analysis of
the bomb has not been received, but given the apparent small
size of the bomb it seems likely that it was not intended to
cause much damage. (UNCLASSIFIED)

NOTES
BSO Terrorist Released by Italian Government
Mulham al-Mamun, a BSO member who murdered an Italian
employee of the Rome El Al airline office in April 1973, has
been granted a release from prison on provisional liberty, ac-
cording to Il Messagero of 17 July. The conditions-for the
release include posting a 30 million lire bond and signing a
promise to remain in Italy. It can be expected, however, that
al-Mamun will leave Italy, as have all fedayeen terrorists pre-
viously released on provisional liberty. The release was
ordered on the grounds that the legal period for holding someone
pending trial had expired. (See the 17 June issue for a report
of BSO pressure on the Italian government to secure al-Mamun's
release.) (UNCLASSIFIED)
