NOTES
Khartoum BSO Terrorists Imprisoned in Egypt
The eight Black September Organization terrorists con-
victed of murdering two U.S. diplomats and the Belgian Charge
d'Affaires in Khartoum in. March 1973 are currently in an Egyp-
tian prison, according to the State Department. The eight,
sentenced to life imprisonment on 24 June by a Khartoum court,
had their terms reduced by Sudanese President Numayri and were
reportedly to be turned over to the Palestine Liberation Organi-
zation (PLO) to serve seven-year sentences. According to press
reports Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi gave assurances
to the U.S. Ambassador in Cairo that the terrorists would be
imprisoned.
The Beirut newspaper An-Nahar reported on 2 July that the
PLO has undertaken negotiations with Egyptian authorities to
secure the release of the terrorists and that they are expected

London Airport Put on Alert
British authorities stationed up to 1,000 troops and po-
lice at London's Heathrow airport from 26-30 June in an appar-
ent effort to thwart terrorist attacks on commercial airliners.
Troops patrolled the perimeter of the airport and manned the
overseas arrival and departure lounges, while police stopped
all arriving vehicles at airport entrances. A London newspaper
reported on 26 June that intelligence reports from the Middle
East indicated that- Palestinians planned to attack Israeli,
Dutch and U.S. aircraft at Heathrow.
The extra security precautions were taken, according to
British authorities, because of the constant general threat of
possible terrorist incidents. The U.S. Defense Attache in Lon-
don, however, reported on 1 July that the alert was cancelled
on 30 June after the arrival of all the delegates to the Social-
ist International conference currently being held outside of
London. Israeli Prime Minister Rabin is one of the delegates

Sentence of British Airways Hijackers to be Appealed by
Prosecutor
The public prosecutor in Haarlem, Netherlands announced on
28 June that he is appealing the five-year sentences of the two
fedayeen who hijacked a British Airways plane on 3 March 1974.
The case will come before a court of appeal in. the autumn. The
two hijackers were sentenced in Haarlem on 6 June. (See the
12 June issue, page 6.) The U.S. Embassy in The Hague com-
mented that the prosecutor obviously is dissatisfied with what
he considers lenient sentences for the hijackers. (UNCLASSI-

Meir Kahane Receives Suspended Sentence in Israel
Rabbi Meir Kahane, former leader of the U.S.-based Jewish
Defense League (J:DL), was sentenced to a suspended two-year
jail term in Israel on 28 June, according to a United Press
story from Jerusalem. He was charged with conspiring to damage
Israeli-U.S. relations by blowing up foreign embassies in Wash-
ington. According to UPI, Kahane faces another trial. in Novem-
ber for attempting to smuggle arms into the United States for
an alleged JDL operation to counter Arab guerrilla attacks.

Kahane's conviction resulted from a letter he wrote to an
individual in the U.S. in early June 1973, recommending terror-
ist actions that the Israelis believed might be connected with
the late June visit to the U.S. of Soviet Party Chairman Leonid
Brezhnev. Kahane proposed actions against Soviet diplomats,
U.S. business firms dealing with the USSR, and the Soviet and
Iraqi embassies. (See the issue of 13 June 1973, page 1.)

FLNC Claims Credit for Bombing Cuban Embassy--in Paris
On 3 July a charge exploded in front of the Cuban Embassy
in Paris, demolishing the embassy doorframe, damaging furnish-
ings in the foyer of the embassy, and blowing out windows along
the street within 50 yards of the building. There were no in-
juries to embassy personnel or to pedestrians. The explosive,
consisting of some 200 to 300 grams (approximately 7 to 10
ounces) of plastic, was contained in a knapsack which was hung
on the doorway of the embassy by a man described as being in
his 30's, dressed in blue work clothes. The bomb went off
about one minute after being placed and emitted rather heavy
smoke before exploding.
According to FBI information, a Miami newspaper received
a telephone call on 3 July from a person identifying himself
as "Arcadio," representing the commandos of the Cuban National
Liberation Front (FLNC). He said that "Operation Juan Felipe
de la Cruz" had taken place with the bombing of the Cuban Em-
bassy in Paris. Arcadio said those involved in the bombing
were not from Miami but were European commandos. The FLNC, a
Miami-based Cuban exile terrorist organization, has claimed
credit in the past for bombing Cuban diplomatic installations
in Spain, Mexico, Jamaica and the U.K. and for attacks against
Cuban fishing vessels. Juan Felipe de la Cruz, a member of a
presently inactive Cuban exile revolutionary organization
called the Directorio Revolucionario (DR), was killed by an
accidental bomb explosion in August 1973 at Avrainville,
France, while preparing to bomb the Cuban embassies in Paris
and London. (See the 8 August 1973 issue, page 7.) The Miami
head of the DR told the FBI that the DR was not involved in

NOTES
Body of U.S. Vice-Consul Believed Found in Mexico
A body believed to be that of kidnapped U.S. Vice-Consul
John L. Patterson has been discovered near Hermosillo, according
to press reports quoting Mexican police officials. While no
positive identification has yet been made, a ring found on the
body bore the initials of Patterson and his wife and the date
of their marriage. Authorities also stated that clothes found
with the body and dental records led to the identification.
The remains were discovered in a dried brook off a dirt path
about eight miles east of Hermosillo. Police officials said
the body had apparently been buried in the brook bed until
recent heavy rains uncovered the remains. Patterson, who was
on his first diplomatic assignment, was last seen leaving the
U.S. Consulate in Hermosillo on 22 March. (See the issues of

Possible Visit of Fatah/PLO Leader Yasir Arafat to Moscow
According to the Cairo press on 5 July, Yasir Arafat,
Fatah leader and chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organi-

NOTES
Mercedes-Benz Executive Released in Argentina
Herbert Pilz, the production director of the Argentine
affiliate of the Mercedes-Benz Motor Company who was abducted
on 14 June, was freed unharmed on 10 July, according to the
Buenos Aires press. Pilz left Argentina for West Germany
immediately after his release. The company's press and public
relations director said the negotiations for Pilz's release
were handled by German representatives of the company who
traveled to Argentina for that express purpose. The amount of
ransom paid for Pilz's release was not specified, nor were his
abductors identified. (The kidnapping was reported in the 19

Argentine Government Extradites Hijackers to Mexico
On 26 July the Argentine Ministry of Justice announced
that it was extraditing to Mexico the two individuals respon-
sible for the 2 July 1971 hijacking of a Braniff Airlines jet.
The two hijackers, Robert Lee Jackson, an American, and Ligia
Lucrecia Sanchez Arcilla, a Guatemalan, seized control of the
airliner as it flew over San Antonio, Texas and forced it to
fly to Monterey, Mexico. The Mexican government paid the hi-
jackers $100,000 in ransom for the release of 102 passengers.
The hijackers took the plane to Peru and Brazil before surren-
dering in Buenos Aires.
The Argentine government had received extradition demands
from both Mexico and the United States but extradited the two
to Mexico because that is where the hijackers obtained the ran-
som money. During his imprisonment in Argentina, Jackson was
foiled in a plan to escape from the "Model" prison in La Plata
when prison guards discovered a 22-caliber pistol in his
