Investigation of Colombian Airline Hijacking
Two judges have been named by the Colombian Government to
investigate the 30 May hijacking of the Sociedad Aeronautica
de Medellin (SAM) airliner, (described in the 6 June issue,
page 5), the escape of the two hijackers, and also the where-
abouts of a Paraguayan football player, Francisco Solano Patino,
who disappeared in Pereira, the airplane's last: stop before the
hijacking took place. Solano Patino is reported to have said
half jokingly that he would soon hijack an airplane to escape
from his problems, according to news reports. The identity
and nationality of the hijackers remain unknown., although the
National Liberation Army, a pro-Cuban guerrilla. group, has
publicly claimed responsibility for the incident. Colombian
authorities, however, continue to believe that the hijackers
were common criminals rather than ideologically motivated.

Continued Terrorist Activities in Argentina
During the week of 3 June Charles Agnew Lockwood, British
director of the Roberts Finance Company, was kidnapped at gun-
point outside his suburban Buenos Aires home by six men.
Identifying themselves as members of the Trotskyite People's
Revolutionary Army (ERP), the kidnappers contacted Lockwood's
family and demanded a ransom of $2 million for h:is release.
Efforts to raise the cash to pay the ransom, which is the
largest ever demanded by Argentine terrorists, are being made
by business associates of Lockwood. (Comment: The Roberts
Finance Company is an Argentine firm which represEents Morgan
Guarantee International of London and Barring Brothers and
Company of London.)
On 8 June, during a clandestine news conference, leaders
of the ERP denied that their organization had kidnapped Lock-
wood or had been responsible for the blackmail threats against
the Ford Motor Company, the Otis Elevator Company, or General
Motors. An ERP splinter group calling itself the August 22
Command, however, has publicly claimed responsibility for
extorting $1 million from the Ford Motor Company. (For fur-
ther related information on terrorism in Argentina, please
see pages 3 and 10 of the 6 June and 30 May issues respec-
tively.) (UNCLASSIFIED)

Terrorism Against 'Foreign Businesses Continues in_Argentina
During the past week, Argentine terrorists kidnapped two
foreign businessmen and continue to hold two others, bombed
the residences of two Fiat executives and forced still another
foreign executive to quit his job. The executive of the Ford
Motor Company who was the target of a 21 May People's Revolu-
tionary Army (ERP) kidnap attempt died from his wounds. Also
during the past week, the ERP publicly declared an. "open war"
on all companies it considers exploitative.
ERP terrorists are still holding the two businessmen whom
they kidnapped earlier this month. The ERP is holding John
Thompson, the chairman of the Argentine affiliate of the Fire-
stone Tire and Rubber Company, for a ransom of one million
dollars. The kidnappers identified themselves as members of
the ERP in two phone calls to Thompson's family, according to
company spokesmen. (For further details see the 22 June issue,
page 6.) ERP is also believed to be holding British business-
man Charles Lockwood, director of the Roberts Finance Company
and chairman of the local affiliate of Britain's Acrow Steel
Company, for a two million dollar ransom. (See the 20 June
issue, page 6 and the 13 June issue, page 6.)
On 19 June the German-born manager of an Argentine manu-
facturing firm was abducted by several unidentified gunmen
while he was leaving his home for work. The kidnappers have
not been identified and their ransom demands are unknown.
The Argentine press reported on 25 June that Mario
Baratella, the Vice President of the Italian Bank of Rio de
la Plata, was kidnapped from his suburban home by unidenti-
fied gunmen over the weekend. Informed sources stated that
the kidnappers were demanding a ransom of two million dollars.
Members of Baratella's family have denied that he has been
abducted. (Comment: According to recent press reports, some`
U.S. firms have published a memorandum on how businesses should
deal with kidnappers. The memorandum recommends that relatives
not notify the police, and keep publicity at a minimum.)
On 25 June Gianmarco Dolce, the Italian manager of the
Gilera Motor Cycle Company, announced that he was resigning
from the firm because of several threats on his life by the

ERP. The ERP had accused Dolce of "crimes against the working
people." Prior to Dolce's resignation, the homes of two Fiat
Company executives were bombed on 18 June. There were no
casualties and the bombers are as yet unidentified.
Also on 25 June, Argentine Ford Motor Company executive
Luis Giovanelli died of wounds he received on 21_May in an
unsuccessful kidnapping attempt by the ERP. (See the 23 May

Money Taken in Recent Colombian Hijacking Partly Recovered
Some $22,000 in cash and valuables has been returned by
the Paraguayan Government to the Colombian airline whose plane
was hijacked by two men early this month. (See 6 June issue,
page 5.) The two hijackers evidently divided the $50,000 ran-
som they had collected, and one of the men left the plane in
the northern Argentine city of Resistencia with his share and
has not been heard from since. The other, a 31-year old

Assassination and extortion threats
against U.S. and foreign businessmen
made by the Trotskyite People's Revolu-
tionary Army (ERP) were reported in the
press during May and June. U.S. execu-
tives at Otis Elevator Company and Gen-
eral Motors, a British employee at
Gorock, Lopez and Carvas Company and the
Italian manager of the "Gilera" Italian
motorcycle company specifically were tar-
geted. The ERP denied making the threats
against Otis and General Motors and a
dissident faction of the ERP may be in-
volved. (See 30 May issue, page 8 for
background information on the ERP.)
